When it just isn’t working

It can sometimes feel that despite working harder and doing more we are getting less. Less happiness, less satisfaction, and less return for the hard work put in.

Earlier this week, as I was quickly hoovering with a full vacuum that wasn’t picking up properly, causing me to get frustrated in the process, I suddenly stopped and laughed at myself. I had remembered Stephen Covey’s words on ‘Sharpen your Saw’ about how we need to stop using a blunt saw. We should sharpen it if we want it to be effective.

It made me laugh because I know this. In fact, I teach it! Yet in the moment of rushing around trying to get everything done I’d convinced myself that I didn’t need to empty the vacuum, it would pick up if I just kept going over the same spot. Of course, it didn’t matter how many times I’d been over the same spot, it wasn’t picking up. I had to stop to empty it before it worked.

How many times do we keep doing something that clearly isn’t working because we say we haven’t got the time to stop?

Stopping to clear out the dust and grime from our lives and ‘defluff’ the things that are clogging us up, getting in the way of what we want to achieve, is essential.

Having delivered numerous Personal Resilience and Wellbeing Workshops around the country, I frequently get participants to commenting that they weren’t going to attend because they were too busy but having taken part they now realise that my workshop was the best use of their time.
